Innovative Teacher Training Modules

The following sample modules can be made available to States as exemplars of training modules that use active or constructivist training processes. These can provide useful exposure to States as they design their own modules

2. 'Transformative Teacher Training' sample training modules - TSG Samples Training Modules developed by TSG, designed to involve teachers/trainers in experiential, participatory activities that enable them to reflect on their beliefs and assumptions regarding teaching and learning, to experience and internalise the approach promoted by NCF 2005 and the RTE Act, and to plan for how to bring some of these changes into their own classrooms. Topics include ‘Our Vision for our schools’, ‘NCF 05 & RTE’, ‘Teaching as Relationships’, ‘Equality & Inclusion’, ‘Nature of Active Learning’, ‘Exploring our Beliefs & Assumptions’, etc.
3. Toolkit on ‘Embracing Diversity: Toolkit for Creating Inclusive, Learning-Friendly Environments’ - UNESCO Great teacher-friendly Training Handbooks, with 6 booklets on 6 different themes, designed to be used either in interactive workshops or as self-learning tools by teachers. Each contains information, tools, and practical activities that can be used during a training workshop, on the following topics:
  1. Becoming an Inclusive, Learner Friendly Environment
  2. Working with Families and Communities
  3. Getting all children in school and learning
  4. Creating Inclusive, Learner-friendly Classrooms
  5. Managing Inclusive, Learning-friendly classrooms
  6. Creating a Healthy and Protective ILFE
4. Toolkit 1 – Positive Discipline in the Inclusive, Learning-Friendly Classroom - UNESCO This guide for teachers and teacher educators enriches the UNESCO ILFE Toolkit. It is a specialized booklet intended to help teachers, school administrators, and education officials to effectively manage students in the classroom by giving non-violent ways to deal with behavioural challenges positively and pro-actively. It presents positive discipline tools that are concrete alternatives to such punishment practices as caning, spanking, pinching, threatening, etc.
5. Toolkit 2 - Practical Tips for Teaching Large Classes - UNESCO This module attempts to present a variety of practical methods and practices for teachers who need to deal with a large class every day. It addresses issues such as how to prepare and plan lessons specifically adapted for large classes. Furthermore, it provides useful tips and pointers to manage the class in the best possible way and to see the large class as a resource, rather than a challenge, to the teaching-learning process.
6. Toolkit 3 – Teaching Children with Disabilities - UNESCO This module offers a holistic, practical means to make schools and classrooms more inclusive, learning-friendly and gender-sensitive. This guide focuses on the specific issues that need to be addressed when teaching people with disabilities, with practical guidelines to successfully teach children with disabilities with quality.
7. Group Facilitation Strategies - ODNR Great resource with formats of different types of useful activities that can be used in a training workshop, for different purposes
8. Creative Facilitation Techniques - Permaculture Great resource with formats of different types of interactive activities that can be used in training workshops, for different purposes (Eg. Energisers, Icebreakers, Lead-Ins, Group Formation, goal-setting, improving managerial skills, etc)
9. In My Classroom: A guide to reflective practice - USAID In My Classroom starts out with two chapters that help the facilitator understand the purposes and principles of the materials. Chapters Three through Seven address specific topics: Facilitation skills, Classroom management, Teaching & Learning materials, Continuous Assessment, Gender Issues, Life skills. Each activity engages groups of teachers in discussion of the topic and how it relates to their own experiences.
10. Sample Teacher Workshop: Psychosocial Support – EIE Toolkit, Save the Children Sample of a Training session (with detailed Trainer instructions) to enable participants to understand the importance of activities in psychosocial support
11. EIE Sample Teacher Workshop: Large Classes – EIE Toolkit, Save the Children Sample of a Training session for teachers on Teaching Large Class sizes (with detailed instructions for the Trainer)
12. EIE: Sample Workshop – Active Learning – EIE Toolkit, Save the Children Sample of a Training session for teachers on Active learning (with detailed instructions for the Trainer)
13. Life Skills module – National Commission for Human Development Fully developed training modules on training teachers for teaching different life skills (Communication skills, Information Gathering Skills, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Empathy), with additional reading materials for teachers on Multiple Intelligences, Teaching Techniques, Learning Disabilities, Lesson Planning, sample lessons)
14. Toolkit on Positive Discipline - Save the Children This training toolkit offers a framework and a series of practical tools and activities to promote positive discipline in all the above mentioned concepts. Examples of various activities provided at the end of each section which can be used in a training workshop.
15. Inclusive Education Module: Defining Special Needs – Disability Action Council, Cambodia Training module with instructions for trainers for using active learning methodologies and processes for training teachers on special needs education
16. Inclusive Education Module: Disability Awareness – Disability Action Council, Cambodia Training module with instructions for trainers for using active learning methodologies and processes for training teachers on disability awareness
17. Cambodia Module –Warm-up Activities Ideas for various energisers or warm-up activities that can be used in a training workshop
18. ‘Inclusion in Action’ Workshop Activities Includes detailed notes on the activities used during a training workshop on ‘Inclusion in Action’ conducted by Atlas Alliance in Zanzibar. Includes ideas for different types of effective training activities and methodologies, the rationale for each type of methodology, descriptions of what were the processes followed, reflections on what was the reaction of participants and what could be done to make the training more effective.
19. UNESCO Sourcebook for Primary Science Very useful resource for training teachers on teaching science. Part 1 deals with the methods of teaching related to active learning. Through workshop activities, ideas are introduced about how children gradually form a scientific understanding of their environment, the role in this of process skills, the identification of these skills and the importance of children’s initial ideas as starting-points in learning. Part Two of the book provides exemplary classroom activities which are intended to be used by teachers during courses as well as with children.
20. Education in Emergencies Training: Facilitators’ Guide – UNICEF, INEE, Save the Children Set of 21 training modules focusing on the theory and practice of education in emergencies, including activities focusing on facilitation techniques for conducting interactive training workshops.
